Having the right jacket for the conditions can make a big difference to how you feel and how you perform, so here we will look at some of the best in the market, and what the difference is between waterproof and water resistant?

Fully Waterproof

Due to the relative lack of breathability, fully waterproof and seam sealed running jackets are less common than water resistant jackets, but we have a range of some of the best on the market.

Water Repellent/Resistant

Offering a blend of protection and breathability, these jackets will see you through showers and help keep the wind away.

What is the difference between the terms Waterproof, water repellent and water resistant? It’s a little bit technical, but it can make a big difference to how your jacket performs.

The way they measure the resistance to water for any given fabric is by making it support a column of water 1 inch thick. The taller the column it can support, the more waterproof it is. A column above 1,500mm (called the hydrostatic head) is generally regarded as waterproof.

Water resistant jackets will have a lower ability to withstand rain, making them great for holding out against light showers, but not a full deluge. They do come with other advantages though, without a waterproof liner they can be made lighter, more flexible, and often more breathable.

Water repellent jackets are the least good at keeping you dry, commonly using a treatment to the fabric (Durable Water Repellent or DWR) that will cause light rain to bead up and roll off. However, as this treatment does not affect the material, these layers can be particularly flexible, as well as lightweight and breathable.

Having suffered from Chronic Fatigue for over a decade, I am a recent convert to the joys of running. Although every run steals a lot of energy, the mental health and fitness benefits more than make up for it. My runs are mainly across the back of the nearby beaches, dodging between the tourists. When not geeking out over the latest running tech, you can find me trying new gins, making gins, or boring anyone within earshot about gin.
